Introduction
------------

Ranma 1/2 is a popular anime series that has fans from around the world.
You can find many sites and fans of this series all across the internet.
One of the manifestations of this fandom is #ranma, which may be found on
EFnet. Many people frequently visit this channel. While often the topic of
discussion has nothing to do with Ranma 1/2, be patient. Everyone who
frequents this channel is more than happy to babble about Ranma 1/2 (most of
the time).

This FAQ was created mainly to answer questions for newbies, and to provide
future release dates that even the veterans may be interested in. If you ask
a question that's already been answered in here, it's very likely that you
will be ignored or even kicked if you're being obnoxious. However, if you
have a unique question that insn't answered in here, then feel free to ask!
Just be patient. Many of us idle because we have other things we need to do
(believe it or not, people on IRC sometimes do have lives outside of IRC),
but someone'll be bound to come around and talk to you eventually.

I sincerely hope this FAQ answers your most burning of questions.

#ranma and FTP Rule List
---------------------------

#ranma Rules
------------

I really hate to have to quantify rules beyond "respect each other", but on
IRC this is a must. There are too many people, and things could get
complicated very easily.

Breaking any of these rules may result in warnings, kicks, and maybe even
permanent bans. Please keep in mind that we will not accept ignorance as an
excuse since we have a bot messaging people on join to read this rules list
that's written in plain English.

1. Respect each other.

In other words, don't be rude, obnoxious, insulting, irritating, etc. Just
because it's IRC and you can't see the people you're talking to, doesn't mean
you can behave however you want! Believe it or not, there ARE real people on
the other side of the screen.

The ops are very lienent about what goes on in #ranma, but use common sense
here. There's no way to define an exact level of bad behavior, so this rule
is left up to the discretion of the ops that are active at the current time.

We're not asking you to like everyone, but to just have some respect.

2. No spamming or flooding.

Spamming is defined as throwing out garbage that nobody cares about with the
sole purpose of annoying others. This includes writing URLs so that they
display over and over again when you quit and coming in and obnoxiously
advertising another site or channel. An obvious exception is URLs for your
personal sites as long as you don't come into the channel with the sole
purpose of typing /quit to broadcast your URL.

Flooding is simply spitting out spam at a very fast rate. Please don't do
this; it's very annoying.

3. No timed messages of any kind.

Please deactivate any kinds of messages that are broadcast into the main
channel on a regular basis. This is especially true for onjoin /msg's and
autoaway messages. We don't need to see "Ranma is away: fighting Ryoga"
every 10 minutes, for example. Think about how the people who AREN'T idle
feel when they see that being spammed into the channel every 10 minutes.

It's okay to do so ONCE when you leave, and ONCE when you get back, like
"Ranma is away: Fighting Ryoga" when you leave, and "Ranma is back" when you
get back.

4. No spoilers.

This is a rule that you'll probably only find in this channel, and I want to
make sure I have this very clearly defined so that we don't have any
misunderstandings.

A spoiler is defined as saying something in main that gives away an entire
story or important plot element for someone who hasn't seen or read a
particular story. Now of course some people have seen a fair amount, some
have seen everything that's been released, and some people have seen very
little. What a spoiler is and what a spoiler isn't varies from person to
person on what they've seen, so please be carful.

For things that have been released by Viz, please be careful. We'll be more
lax on this, but don't ruin it for people that haven't seen it yet. Talking
about a few things that happen in an episode is fine, but don't give away the
entire plot or the plot resolution! If ANY member of the channel asks you to
stop, (doesn't have to be an op) then please do so.

Now for things that have not yet been released by Viz, we will have zero
toleration for. This includes ANY element of ANY story not yet released,
ESPECIALLY characters that have not been introduced or the ending! If you do
these things, expect an immediate and possibily permanent ban.

We're sorry to be so rough, but many people do not want to have the stories
wrecked. Please also keep in mind that most of us are North Americans
(Americans and Canadians mostly), and have to put up with Viz. Most of us
hate having to wait so long, but we have no other choice. Thank you in
advance for your consideration! If you're not sure what point Viz is up to,
check the master list section.

For any non-Ranma series, the offical policy is that we don't care. But keep
in mind that some people DO care. An op still has the right to throw you out
if you start talking about non-Ranma spoilers, but that's not a rule and is
solely the op's discretion.

5. Do not abuse any of the channel's triggers or scripts.

We sometimes have triggers that provide information, or scripts that provide
entertainment (like quotes or whatnot).

Please do not abuse these triggers or scripts by activating them over and
over! You will be held responsible for flooding the channel, not the bot
that happens to be running the script.

There's no real way to define what is and what is not abuse as every case is
different, so enforcement of this rule will be left solely to the discretion
of any active ops.

6. No asking for ops or for the use of our bots.

Giving people ops is a dangerous business. If you give them to the wrong
people, your channel could be taken over very easily. Asking for ops will
make you look suspicious and be immediately distrusted. Sorry to be so
harsh, but channel takeovers are very common.

If we'd like you to be an op, we'll come to you. Ops are picked and
depending on certain conditions.

Same goes for the use of our bots. Sorry, but we won't use our botnet to
"hold" a channel for you, no matter how many times you ask. It'd be too easy
for people to do something bad to the bot owners. We sometimes work hard to
make sure our bots are running in tip-top condition, and we don't need
someone trying to foul it all up for the sake of taking over a channel.

--

If you have a problem with any of the rules above, talk to an op, but don't
be rude about it. The ops may take what you say into consideration. The
answer is NOT to protest the rules by simply breaking them.

Remember that IRC is not a right, but a privlidge. If you absolutely can't
live the rules that we feel are reasonable, then you have three options:

1. /part
2. /quit
3. Press the power button on your computer. It's just IRC!

It's voluntary. No one's keeping you here against your will!

FTP Rules List
-----------------

Before you even read the rules, keep in mind that several people in this
channel work to maintain FREE FTP servers so that you may download (leech)
various things for FREE. They never expect ANYTHING in return.

1. No hammering sites.

Hammering happens when a site is full, and a user becomes impatient. So in
order to grab a spot on the FTP as soon as someone logs off, they set their
retry rate to one second. This results in someone trying to connect over and
over again every second until the a spot opens up, and they jump in.

Please set your retries to at LEAST 30 seconds, more if preferable. If
you're caught, you may be simply banned from the FTP server.

2. Do not ask for an account for no reason.

Running a publically accessable FTP site is potentially very dangerous.
Would you give full access to your entire computer or part of your computer
to a total stranger? Think about it.

Besides, if you haven't done anything at all for the channel or for the site
owner specifically, then why should he single you out and give you special
access when almost everyone else has to sit and often wait to get in when the
site is full?

If a site owner would like to give you an account, they'll offer you one.

3. If a site's down, don't harass the site owner.

Site owners often get an earful even when their site goes down for 10
minutes. How would you feel if you had to put up with that almost every day?

Please have some respect. They set their sites up for FREE and expect
NOTHING in return.

Instead of "Set your site up!", "Is so-and-so STILL down?!", or "When are you
going to set your site back up?!", try something like "Thanks for taking the
time to set up your site! It rules!", or "You've got a great site, keep up
the good work." It sounds corny, but you'd be surprised how far sincere
compliments go. After all, we all don't hear enough compliments as it is.

--

Please remember that FTP sites are technically seperate from IRC. If a site
owner chooses to ban you, he has every right. If you have a problem with the
ban, take it up with the owner, and him alone. Sure, an FTP site may
"reside" in the channel, but it's ultimately his.

Being banned from the FTP site doesn't necessarily mean you'll be banned from
the channel, and vice-versa. If you piss off a site owner enough, he still
has the right to request that you be banned from the channel as well, even if
you've only done something wrong on the FTP site. The rest of the ops will
more than likely back him up. Consequently, if you're banned from the
channel, we may or may not ask a site owner to ban you from the FTP site as
well, and he'll most likely cooperate.

This is not a rule, but just an advisory.
#ranma Special Events
---------------------

Occasionally, we'll have special events in the channel. The goal of these
events is not to attract more people to #ranma, but to improve the quality
for the people that DO frequent this channel regularly.

These events may include cosplaying (where everyone assumes a role of a Ranma
1/2 character and "acts out" a typical episode), voting, channel multiplayer
games, special guests somehow involved in the Ranma 1/2 fandom, and many
other things.

Standard channel rules may be suspended, depending on the event.

Time- is the person who's in charge of special events for this channel.
We're always looking for new ideas for different types of events, so if you
have any ideas, please let him know!

Also, you don't necessarily have to be an op if you want to plan or help out
with a special event. The purpose of these events is to involve everyone, so
if you'd like to help, let Time- know!
Ranma 1/2, the Series
---------------------

1. What is Ranma 1/2?

Ranma 1/2 is a popular anime and manga series (if you want to know what anime
and manga are, check the master list section). The story revolves around a
teenage martial artist named Ranma Saotome who one day goes on a training
trip with his father. Due to a certain accident, Ranma now turns into a girl
when he comes in contact with cold water. Hot water turns him back male, but
only until the next time cold water finds its way to him.

As you can imagine, that basic premise can create some really wacky
situations. I won't spoil any more for you. I suggest you start watching or
reading it highly. It's guaranteed for some laughs.

2. How many television seasons are there in Ranma 1/2?

Seven.

3. What is the order that the series progresses in?

First there were seven television seasons. Then, two movies followed. And
after that, there was an OAV series.

I suggest you watch them in order, if possible. Many characters are involved
in this story, and it's a lot more enjoyable if you know where everyone's
coming from.

There's also a manga series. The manga series was the original work that the
anime was based off of. The manga and the anime overlap. There was a period
when both of them were going at the same time, so it's not exactly linear.

4. Who is such-and-such character?

These kinds of questions are beyond the scope of this FAQ. I could answer
many questions like this, but there are already some great sites out there
that do that already. What's the point of doing all that work when it's
already been done by someone else? Besides, this is supposed to be a #ranma
specifc FAQ.

In case you're still interested, check out these places:

Ranma 1/2 Library

Very comprehensive site on all things Ranma. Updated fairly frequently. But
just be warned: if you're the type that doesn't want to know about stories
before you see or read them, be careful here.

Ranma 1/2 FAQ
http://web3162.servers.instant-web.co.uk/RanmaFAQ/
If you have any sort of question about Ranma 1/2, here's another great place
to go. Again, be careful if you don't like spoilers. Only bad thing about
this site is that it hasn't been updated in years!

The Ranma 1/2 Universe
http://www.anime.usacomputers.net/~ranma/ranma.html
Another great information site. Just the Ranma 1/2 FAQ, it hasn't been
updated in years, unfortunately!

The AniPike
http://www.anipike.com
Not really a Ranma site, but it has a massive load of links to all kinds of
anime sites. The Ranma 1/2 section itself is huge! Just be warned that it
contains links to a lot of trash Ranma sites. It takes some sifting to find
the good ones.

5. Is Ranma 1/2 still going on in Japan?

No. The last animated Ranma 1/2 feature was the third movie, and that was
released in 1994. The manga ended as well in 1996.

6. What does OAV stand for? What exactly are the OAVs?

OAV stands for Original Animated Video. They can also be called OVAs, which
is short for Original Video Animation. Technically both are correct, so
don't let anyone bully you either way. The more common usage is OAV,
however.

OAVs are animated features that are neither aired or shown in a theater.
They basically go straight to tape. In the West, OAVs are usually movies
that aren't "good" enough to make it to the theater (Aladdin II, Beauty and
the Beast II. Exact titles escape me). But in Japan, OAVs are a big deal.
They're usually extra stories that may or may not fit into the rest of the
series. But either way, they usually have some very high quality animation.

7. Is season two out of whack? Why is there a flashback from the Skating
Pair story during Shampoo's introduction story in season one?

The skating pair story was originally at the end of season one, and Shampoo's
introduction at the beginning of two.

Ratings weren't as high as they hoped, so they decided to switch these two
stories. Shampoo slid into the end of season 1, and the skating pair story
was pushed back to the beginning of season two. All of these episodes were
complete when they made this last minute decision, so some continuity errors
exist.

This entire decision was based on the fact that they knew that Shampoo was a
popular character, based on her popularity from the manga. They hoped that
Shampoo would give them the boost they needed to survive their first season.

8. There's a third movie? Has it been released? Where can I get it?

Yes, there technically is a third movie. It was a 30 minute short movie that
actually did play in theaters along with two other 30 minute movies.

It was released in North America as an OAV. It's called "Team Ranma vs. the
Legendary Phoenix".

Notice that while you're watching this OAV, it's in widescreen format (the
two bars on the top and bottom of the screen so you can see the entire width
of the movie), and there's no break graphic in the middle of the episode like
all the other OAVs have.
Ranma 1/2 in North America
--------------------------

1. Who publishes Ranma 1/2 in North America?

Viz Communications, Inc. You can find their web site at:

http://www.viz.com

They don't actually produce any anime themselves. They are responsible for
translating, dubbing, subtitling, and distributing.

2. Why did Viz release the movies and OAVs first, then the TV series?

I wish I knew the answer to this question. If anyone knows for sure (and I
mean really sure, not just rumours), please let me know and you will receive
appropriate credit.

3. What's this I hear about Ranma's new voice?

Ranma's old voice actress (yes, male Ranma used to be played by a woman!
Check the credits sometime if you don't belive me) quit for unknown reasons.

She played Ranma for seasons one through three, both movies, and all the
OAVs. The new voice actor (yes, this time it's actually a guy) will be used
for seasons four through seven.

Please note that I'm referring to the dubbed version of Ranma 1/2, and not
the original Japanese voices.

4. Where can I buy Ranma 1/2?

Here's a few places to check out:

AnimeNation
http://www.animenation.com/
These guys are highly recommended. They're fast, friendly on the phone,
flexable, and their communication is excellent. It's starting to pay of for
them too, as business is great for them. Watch them, they'll probably be
expanding soon.

AnimeNation is the only online store I've ever dealt with, so my personal
experience is slim. However, there's a large compilation of links to online
stores on the AniPike at:

http://www.anipike.com/stores.html
Ranma 1/2 Encodings
-------------------

1. When will such-and-such episode/season be encoded?

First off, please don't nag the encoders with these questions. They encode
things so that you may get them for free. They ask for nothing in return.
They'll encode more whenever they have the time. It's a very low priority
activity when you don't get anything in return.

2. Is downloading and/or making encodings legal?

There are too many misconceptions floating around about this, and I hope I
can help clear the air.

The answer is no. Absolutely not. You're effectively replacing their sales
by downloading and watching for free instead of going out to buy and/or rent
the tapes.

I'm not trying to preach at all here. I just would like to make people aware
of what the real facts are, so they can make their own decisions.
#ranma in General
-----------------

1. Does this channel have any dedicated FTP sites? If so, how do I get the
info?

Yes, it does.

And if you'd like to access it, type !baka in the main channel. You'll
receive a notice from one of our resident bots with further information.

Please keep in mind that the FTP sites may go down without notice, and that
there's no way the bot will be able to know. It's there merely to provide
address and login information.

2. Why can't I log onto the FTP sites?

There are many reasons.

The most common one is that the FTP site is full. Wait patiently; you'll
eventually get one. Please understand that bandwith is limited, especially
when the site owner doesn't get anything in return from FTP sites.

There may also be problems with the site owner's ISP. Or maybe he decided to
take it offline, or turn his computer off to give it some rest.

3. I've heard that AkaneChan is a guy. Is that true?

Yes. And if you want to know why he chose a female IRC nick, you'd have to
ask him.

4. Why doesn't anyone ever talk in the channel?

There's a number of reasons why this is happening.

First, computers aren't what they used to be. Multitasking is very easy and
very common nowadays. The days where you would log into one chat and it
would have your undivided attention are long gone. So in other words, people
might be working, chatting, playing games, or doing many other things in
other windows.

Secondly, you may run into trouble if you're visiting us from Europe, Africa,
Asia, or Austrialia. Most of the people who frequent this channel are North
Americans (Americans and Canadians mostly). So when it might be high noon in
Europe, it's most likely 3 or 4AM (03:00 or 04:00) in North America, and most
of us are dead asleep. It's a time difference that we can't overcome,
unfortunately.

Lastly, are you asking a question that's already been answered here? Also,
asking "Does anyone have such-and-such episodes?" will most likely be ignored
unless you are very specific and do not repeat yourself every 5 minutes.
Oftentimes people DO read you, but they don't have what you request and don't
bother to answer. It's pretty safe to assume that silence means no.

Stick around. Maybe try to start a conversation. Someone'll answer you
eventually.

5. Can I borrow the bots? I want them to sit in my channel and hold it.

There are too many risks involved with this. Too many people on IRC are
untrustworthy, and would probably do bad things to the bot owners if they had
the chance.

So in advance, no. Not unless the bot owners know you very well. So in
other words, please don't even ask.
Master List of Ranma 1/2 Releases in North America
--------------------------------------------------

Anime
-----

Anime is the term used for Japanese animation. Anime can range from light
kids' stuff all the way down to extremely dark and violent material intended
only for adults. Either way, there's an anime series out there for just
about anyone. Anime is very fresh and has a particular feeling to it that
most Western works can't quite capture. I can't really describe it to you;
you'll just have to watch some.

With a few expections, Viz releases two episodes per tape. A new tape comes
out roughly every month or so.

NYR stands for "Not Yet Released". If a release date or title is known for
an NYR tape, they will be listed. Titles that have not yet been announced
for certain tapes, but will exist eventually will have a blank field in the
title column.

Ep. is short for episode.

Dubbed
------

Dubbing is the process of recording over the original voices with different
voices. In anime, this is done for translation purposes. The original
Japanese voices are removed and replaced with English ones. Dubbed anime is
loved and hated by many.

Update: It appears that some people refuse to believe me when I tell them
that the fifth season's going to be delayed. Well, here's where I got my
information, which is posted directly on Viz's site:

http://www.viz.com/news/publicrelations/pressreleases/1999/10/ranma.html

Viz has also signed a partnership with Pioneer! It appears that Pokemon's
success has gotten Pioneer's attention.

Pioneer will distribute Viz's anime, but Viz will still be in charge of
translating, dubbing, and subtitling.

Could this mean that the release rates for Ranma will increase?! We wish!

Note: Right now I'm going on the assumption that there will be 24 episodes in
this season. When confirmed or denied, this information will change.

Currently, there is no information available on seasons six or seven. This
section will of course be updated as soon as that becomes available.

---------

In subtitled anime, the original Japanese voices are kept intact. The only

Manga
-----

Manga is the term applied to Japanese comic books. They're usually in black
and white, and have a distinct style to them. Manga tends to concentrate
less on detail and more on conveying emotions through facial expressions, and
telling an involved story. This doesn't hold true to all of them, but those
are the most common distinctions.

The Ranma 1/2 manga series was the original work. The anime is based off of
the manga. The manga was split up into 38 "volumes". Viz uses a different
numbering system which I have yet to understand. If anyone would care to
explain this to me, please do so. You'll receive appropriate credit.

Viz releases monthly comics. There are two parts in every monthly they
release. Like stated before, I'm not sure how Viz's system lines up with the
original Japanese system. They don't edit anything out, but they number them
differently. If you'd like to know more, contact Viz themselves.

After a certain number of monthlies have been released (usually 6), they
combine them all into one compilation book called a graphic novel. Most fans
of the manga half of Ranma 1/2 collect the graphic novels as opposed to the
monthlies. It's much nicer than messing around with stacks upon stacks of
flimsy comic books, but you'll also be missing the artwork that's on the
cover of every monthly as well.

"Pt." stands for number of parts contained. With the exception of some of
the earliest stories in this series, a "part" contains 16 pages.
